On two evenings last year, 500 Amsterdam firefighters came together to vote on innovations suggested by their colleagues. In the line of fire: communications advisor Remco de Korte, who pitched one of four shortlisted ideas (from a longlist of 36). He got the crowd all fired up about his mobile intranetapp.
Remco had come under fire because the brigade’s intranet was only accessible from network computers. And because firefighter is hardly an office job, he was firing blanks with his internal communications. So Remco turned to ILUMY. Together we developed a mobile app that puts the news from the intranet in firefighters’ pockets. The app has more irons in the fire: a contact list of all colleagues, posts from the organization’s social media channels and information about current themes.
But what really sets firefighters’ hearts on fire? Talking about fires, obviously. For this we added a live stream of incidents coming from the control room. To follow updates on all incidents colleagues are involved in, leave them comments (or the occasional snide remark), and ask questions.
Hold your fire, you say: what did those 500 firefighters think of Remco and his idea? Well, they got on like a house on fire. No less than two thirds of them voted for the intranet app!
What’s more: the Brandweer Amsterdam-Amstelland IntraApp is now live in the App Store (iPhone) and Google Play (Android). Remco launched the app with APPle pie at every fire station this week. He even fired one our way.
